1 red onion

1 lemon
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
A pinch of sumac or red pepper flakes (optional)
Warm pita bread or flatbread, to serve

Cooking process

  • Prepare the Accompaniments: In a small bowl, combine the sliced red onion, chopped parsley, the juice of half a lemon, and olive oil. Toss gently. If using, add a pinch of sumac or red pepper flakes for extra flavor.

  • Warm the Mackerel: Open the pouch and carefully transfer the mackerel with its oil into a small skillet. Gently warm over low heat for 3–4 minutes, just until heated through. Alternatively, you can serve it at room temperature straight from the pouch.

  • Assemble the Platter: Place the warm mackerel on a serving plate. Spoon the onion and parsley salad generously over and around the fish. Arrange the lemon slices and warm pita bread on the side.
